Animals
Animals

Animals, a diverse group of living organisms that consume other organisms for energy, have been a constant source of companionship, production, support, and sustenance for much of human history. Maintaining balance in our ecosystems, all animals are connected by the various important roles they play in making the environment function properly and it is the responsibility of humans to preserve and protect these fragile systems. The following collections of animal families provide an overview of the large range of varieties, sizes, and characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects that coexist with humans on Earth. We will be continuing to expand our guides over time to cover in further detail the particular distinctions between the many forms of animal life in the world.

Animal Families and Genera is a subcategory which illustrates a sub-grouping of animals based on their taxonomic families and genera. Animal Families is the sixth of eight biological taxonomic ranks, and specifically refers to a grouping or sub grouping of animals. On the order of biological ranks, Families are between Order and Genus. Animal families are more specific than an animal order or class, yet not as specific as animal genus. Common animal families include domesticated animals such as dogs, cats and turtles, as well as a wide variety of other animals including bears, snakes, and whales. The following collections have been organized to better understand and browse Animals by Families and Genera.

Animal Orders are subcategories which specifically refer to a grouping or sub-grouping of animals based on their taxonomic characteristics. On the order of biological ranks, Animal Orders is between Class and Family, and is the fifth of eight biological taxonomic ranks. There are 19 orders of mammals in the world, most living in North America. These orders include Order Cetacea, which is made up of whales who have a form of teeth. These orders also include meat eating Carnivora, which includes dogs and wolves, and order Artiodactyla, which includes giraffes and farm cattle. The following collections have been organized to better understand and browse the collections of animals by their orders.

Animal Classes is a subcategory which illustrates a taxonomic sub-grouping of animals. On the order of biological ranks, Animal Classes is between Phylum and Order, and is the fourth of eight biological taxonomic ranks. Animal Classes are generally subjective and can vary depending on the animal or taxonomist who is specifying the animal. Popularly, there are five major animal classes which include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The following collections have been organized to better understand and browse the collections of animals by their specific classes.

Animal Habits and Biomes is a subcategory which describes the typical spaces and places which animals occupy during events or for the majority of their lifetimes. Animal Habitats can vary depending on an animal's unique needs, and often times animal habitats and biomes overlap to form essential co-dependencies and ecosystems which create what is lovingly referred to as "the circle of life." The following Animal collections have been organized to better understand and browse Animals by their specific Habitats & Biomes.
