Felines | Felidae

Description
Description

Felines (Felidae) are a family of mammals that include lions, tigers, leopards, domestic cats, and many others. Known for their agility, sharp retractable claws, and keen senses, felines are predominantly carnivorous and skilled hunters. They inhabit diverse ecosystems worldwide, from African savannas to Asian rainforests and urban environments. Evolving around 25 million years ago, felines have adapted various physical and behavioral traits for stealth and predation. While domestic cats are ubiquitous companions, many wild felines face threats from habitat destruction and poaching. Conservation efforts are crucial for endangered species like tigers and snow leopards.

Anatomy
Anatomy

Felines, or cats, have sleek bodies with powerful, flexible spines, aiding in their agility and iconic pouncing. They possess retractable claws for hunting and climbing. Felines have sharp teeth for tearing meat, reflecting their carnivorous diet. Their leg muscles allow for incredible leaps and sprints. Cats communicate through a range of sounds like meows, growls, and purrs. They have exceptional night vision, sensitive whiskers for navigation, and acute hearing to detect even the faintest sounds. Their sense of smell is also sharp, helping them hunt and communicate through scent marking. These traits make felines successful predators and beloved pets.

Human Interaction
Human Interaction

Humans and felines share a deep, ancient bond dating back to when cats were first domesticated in the Near East around 9,000 years ago. Cats are revered for their pest control abilities and companionship. Iconic in pop culture, felines star in countless films, books, and internet memes, with figures like Garfield and the Cheshire Cat. They are adored as pets globally.

Yet, wild felines face threats from habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts include protected areas and breeding programs, especially for endangered species like tigers. The human-feline relationship is a tapestry of cohabitation, affection, and a mutual respect for their independence.

Common Questions
Common Questions
Where did felines originate?

Felines can be traced back to 37 million years ago and are native to almost every region except for Australia and Antarctica. Smaller cats specifically can be traced back to western Eurasia about 10 million years ago. The domestic cat originated in ancient Egypt and Near East and was domesticated about 10,000 years ago.

Which felines live in groups?

Lions are the only felines that truly live in groups called prides. In prides all the females are related and live with the pride for life. A pride typically consists of 5 or 6 female lions, their cubs, and 1 or 2 male lions that mate with the female lions. Cheetah males may gather in bachelor groups temporarily.

What is the biggest feline species?

The biggest feline species is the liger, the hybrid of the lion and tiger that was developed by breeding a male lion and a female tiger. The liger weights about 795 lbs (360 kg) and can reach a length of 11 to 12 feet (3.35 – 3.65 m) with a height of 6 feet (1.82 m). Other big feline species are the Siberian Tiger, Bengal Tiger, and Lion.

Bengal Cat
Drawing of a Bengal cat in side profile with dimensions for height and length

Bengal Cats are an average to large-sized cat breed that was bred as a hybrid between the Asian leopard cat and a domestic cat for the purpose of creating a docile household cat with a wild and exotic appearance displayed through distinct coat patterns and colors. With active, inquisitive, and intelligent personalities, Bengal cats often make for playful, energetic, and confident companions.

The typical Bengal Cat has an overall height of 8”-10" (20-25 cm) and body length of 14”-18” (36-46 cm). An average Bengal Cat weighs between 8-15 lb (3.6-6.8 kg) and has a typical lifespan of 9-15 years.

European Burmese Cat

The European Burmese cat, identified by its rounded head and large, communicative eyes, is a playful breed known to love causing antics for his owner’s attention and amusement. Devoted, loyal, and loving, the European Burmese provides his owner with unconditional love and years of company.

All European Burmese cats can be traced back to Wong Mau, a half Burmese, half Siamese cat brought from Burma, now Myanmar, to San Francisco in 1930. Her owner, Dr. Joseph Thompson, was so taken with her resemblance to cats from Tibet that he sought to isolate and replicate her identifiable physical traits, thus leading to the popularization and breeding of European Burmese cats.

European Burmese Cats have an overall height of 10”-12” (25-30 cm), body length of 15”-18” (38-46 cm), and weight between 6-10 lb (2.7-4.5 kg). European Burmese Cats have a typical lifespan between 15-18 years.

Oriental Shorthair Cat
Dimensioned elevation drawing of an Oriental Shorthair Cat showing typical heights and lengths of the breed

Developed from the Siamese, the Oriental Shorthair cat closely resembles that of its foundational breed with its wedge-shaped head, almond-shaped eyes, and slender physique. It also has extremely large ears, extending the shape of the wedge. Differences come in relation to color as the Oriental Shorthair’s coat varies with over 300 combinations and its eyes are typically a green hue rather than blue. Just like the Siamese, the Oriental Shorthair can be rather vocal, highly intelligent, and (despite its build) has great athletic ability.

The typical Oriental Shorthair has an overall height of 9”-11" (23-28 cm) and body length of 11”-14” (28-36 cm). An average Oriental Shorthair weighs between 9-14 lb (4.1-6.4 kg) and has a typical lifespan of 12-15 years.

Ocicat

The Ocicat, named for its resemblance to the wild Ocelot, is a spotted cat with a lithe, muscular body. An extremely devote and loyal cate, the Ocicat tends to bond with one human in its household. Talkative, but not in an overbearing way, the Ocicat enjoys to communicate with his person and is very sensitive to verbal reprimands.

The Ocicat is the result of a mix of cat breeds; the first Ocicat was Dalai Dotson, an Abyssinian-Siamese mix. However, when Dalai Dotson was recognized as a Ocicat the CFA incorrectly noted her as an Abyssinian-American Shorthair mix. Once the mistake was discovered, Siamese was added, but American Shorthair was not removed, so the breed is now known as a mix of three different cat breeds, Siamese-Abyssinian-American Shorthair.

Ocicat Cats have an overall height of 9”-11” (23-28 cm), body length of 13”-16” (33-41 cm), and weight between 6-14 lb (2.7-6.4 kg). Ocicat Cats have a typical lifespan between 15-18 years.

Turkish Angora Cat

Turkish Angoras, known for their silky, fine, all white coats and blue or amber eyes, are beautiful cats with active personalities. Angoras love to be involved in whatever their humans are doing, but do not enjoy being held. Largely independent and determined, Angoras are most happy doing what they want, when they want. The Turkish Angora breed is an ancient breed, originating from the Asian part of Turkey.

Beloved by the Islamic prophet, Mohammed, the Turkish Angora has always been a popular cat in Turkey before becoming a worldwide sensation. However, the Cat Fancy governing board once declared all longhaired cats to simply be called “longhairs,” which almost resulted in the destruction of the purebred line of Turkish Angoras. Were it not for the determination of the Turkish Zoo to maintain this breed of cat, the purebred Turkish Angora bloodline may have been lost forever.

Turkish Angora Cats have an overall height of 8”-10" (20-25 cm), body length of 14”-16” (36-41 cm), and weight between 5-10 lb (2.3-4.5 kg). Turkish Angora Cats have a typical lifespan between 12-18 years.
