Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father who served as the third President of the United States of America. He was born in Virginia in 1743 on his family’s plantation near present day Charlottesville. He was selected for Congress in 1775 and became the principle author of the Declaration of Independence. He then served as the first Secretary of State under President George Washington and was later elected as President, serving from 1801 to 1809.  He was considered a well-learned man. He kept diaries throughout his life, recording his thoughts and political ideas. He had a keen interest in architecture and gardening.
