Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR)

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who is often referred to as FDR, served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A member of the Democratic Party, he became a key figure in global politics during the first half of the 20th century, mainly due to America’s involvement in the Second World War and his contribution to the European peace process. Franklin D. Roosevelt was born in New York, trained to become a lawyer and then moved into politics. He married Eleanor Roosevelt, and although they became estranged later in their relationship, they had six children together. At 39, Franklin was stricken with a paralytic neurological illness that left him unable to move from the waist down. His disability and his rehabilitation work and wheelchair usage was well known to the public.
