Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola)

Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola)

Series of side and front elevation illustrations of the Blue Duiker
Description
Description

The Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola) is unique from most antelopes in that females are larger than males. Even so, it is the smallest in the duiker family and inhabits the rainforests, the dense thickest, and mountain forests of Central and Southern Africa. The coat can be brown or another color with a blue tint and white underside while the hide is short, with spiky horns. Both sexes may have horns, but this is more dominant in males. The blue duiker is diurnal and secretive, eating leaves and fallen fruits. Males and females form monogamous pairs. It has a short dark tail and sounds alarms by snorting, stamping, or whistling.

Antelopes, classified under the Antilopinae subfamily, are diverse, hoofed mammals primarily native to Africa, with some species in Asia. They are not a taxonomically defined group but rather a term for many even-toed ungulates that aren't bovines, caprids, or giraffes.
