Once a liquid enters into the mouth, it is promptly swallowed, traveling downwards through the rest of the body where it can then be used to aid in a handful of critical physiological processes. Humans typically use cups or some other form of container to both hold the liquid as well as aid in transferring it into the mouth. The term drinking can also be used to refer to the social activity of consuming alcohol, such as when one goes out drinking with their friends at a bar.
