Godzilla is a titular fictional monster that first appeared in Japanese film in 1954 and subsequent films in the franchise. Godzilla takes the form of a prehistoric, dinosaur like creature, that is enormous in size and causes material destruction wherever it travels. Conceived in the years after the Second World War and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla is often thought of as a metaphor for nuclear weapons. In more recent years, there have been several new representations of Godzilla, where the monster appears as both a danger to humanity, but also as its protector.
